Fiery Makeleni cuts Nkuntayi down in four rounds

Once again Mthatha youngster Siseko Makeleni thrilled the fans with his sublime boxing skills when he knocked out experienced Siyabulela Nkuntayi in round four of their junior-featherweight clash at Lusikisiki Teachers Training College Hall on Saturday.

Makeleni, a 21-year-old lanky boxer was fighting on the undercard of Isizwe Promotions tournament held in the remote Transkei area for the first time.

The main attraction saw local boy Sebelomzi Mzimela using his homeground advantage to outpoint Duncan Village’s former SA title challenger Loyiso Dayimani over eight rounds.

However, it was Makeleni again who left an indelible mark with his breathtaking skills.

Nicknamed “Majayivana”, Makeleni notched up his fourth straight win all by stoppages and looks destined for stardom.

Already his management is plotting his next move with the Eastern Cape title the target.

His promoter Siphatho Handi says plans are afoot for Makeleni to fight for the soon-to-be-vacant provincial junior-featherweight crown.

The title is held by Handi-promoted and Transkei-born Luthando Mbumbulwana who is expected to move up a division.

“Mbumbulwana will defend his crown against Simthembele Luzipho and then move up to the featherweight and paved the way for Makeleni to fight for the title,” said Handi.

Mbumbulwana is one of the brightest stars trained by Mthetho Dumuzweni including his son Athi who lost a challenge to former SA junior-bantamweight champion Thembelani Maphuma when they fought for the provincial title at Mdantsane Indoor Centre two weeks ago.

Like Makeleni, Dumezweni was engaging in his fifth professional fight and his gutsy performance against a seasoned boxer like Maphuma served notice that his future is also bright.

While Dumezweni, who is also Handi’s promotion, suffered his first loss to Maphuma, Makeleni seems to be invincible at the moment as this scribe predicted he will be a national champion before his 10th professional fight.
