Bodybuilding will be at the forefront today as some of the country’s best bodybuilders will be in the city for the annual Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic Africa qualifier taking place at Hemingways Mall.

It is the first time the qualifier will be held in the city and is expected to boost the bodybuilding scene in the region.

“This is going to be the first time that the event is taking place in East London,” event organiser and Bodybuilding South Africa vice-president Khaya Majeke said.

“This is a massive event for East London as it is of national standard because you can qualify here to compete at the All Africa Arnold Classic in May.”

Around 100 bodybuilders in both the men’s and ladies’ divisions will be gracing the event and and with the best of the Eastern Cape in attendance as well as some out of country opposition, with four bodybuilders from Zambia taking part, it is all set to be a fantastically competitive occasion.

“You wouldn’t throw yourself in the lions’ den if you cannot compete at this standard and at this event we will be choosing people who we believe can compete against the best in Africa,” Majeke said.

Current Mr South Africa Louis Bessinger and former Mr South Africa Vusumzi Njisane are just two of the big names taking part and they will be wanting to impress and add to their already impressive resumés.

“We have a number of guys from the Eastern Cape who are seeking international rankings points and they will be fighting for good positions in the event,” Majeke said.

“By virtue of our athletes competing against the best in the continent it will elevate the status of bodybuilding in the Eastern Cape and by showcasing our athletes we give them the opportunity to get further in the sport.”

Adding to the event will be the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) president Gideon Sam, who will be the guest speaker at the event.

With such a packed schedule it seems that we could be in for a feast of bodybuilding action.

Prejudging for the event starts at 9am this morning while the main show will get under way at 5pm this afternoon.

Spectators will have to pay an entrance fee of R180 for the full day.

The first 100 people to buy a ticket for the event are guaranteed a complimentary ticket for the main Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic event in May in Johannesburg while one lucky fan in the audience could win a ticket that also includes accommodation.

Tickets are available at Fitness Joint, Body Culture, Body Classic and Active Attitude.
