Mnguni stands firm on weigh-in venue

BOXING promoter Mzi Mnguni has insisted that the final weigh-in of his Sunday tournament will be held at the Mdantsane Hotel tomorrow.

Mnguni, who will be presenting his first tournament since recovering from a massive stroke in March, was reacting to the furore that erupted at the premedical of the tournament at the hotel on Tuesday.

This when Boxing SA-Eastern Cape manager Phakamile Jacobs ordered for the premedical to be moved to the Fitness Joint gymnasium at NU 6 mall.

Jacobs was upset when the broken down scale was brought in to weigh the boxers.

Jacobs’ office, which is housed at the hotel owned by Mnguni, has been locked for a couple of months as a consequence of outstanding rental.

All the tools used to conduct administration including the scale is locked in the office.

Local promoters have been using the Fitness Joint gymnasium to conduct premedicals and weigh-ins.

Asked why he has locked the BSA office, Mnguni says there was good reason for that but declined to reveal details.

But he insisted that the weigh-in will be conducted at the hotel and Jacobs will have to comply with that.

Mnguni could not say if a solution has been found to open the office of the most active boxing region in the country.

BSA chairwoman Ntambi Ravele had distanced the body from the debacle saying Jacobs should sort it out himself.

Jacobs declined to comment.
