New BSA boss is ‘top secret’

A veil of secrecy has been placed over the identity of the chief executive of Boxing SA before the announcement by Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula today.

BSA chairwoman Ntambi Ravele confirmed that the announcement would be made in Pretoria this afternoon but flatly refused to divulge the name.

“I cannot even bite your ear about it because you know even our lines are not safe,” she said, when pushed to reveal the name.

The appointment of the CEO will finally put an end to the chaotic administration which has been left vacant since the resignation of Loyiso Mtya, who was acting in the position following the suspension of Mthatha’s Moffat Qithi in 2013.

After a marathon case, Qithi was finally fired, among others, for not disclosing his criminal record, which allegedly included drunken driving, possession of stolen property and drinking in public cases.

But Qithi is challenging his dismissal and has taken BSA to the CCMA.

Ravele confirmed that she was aware that Qithi was still fighting his dismissal.

“But we cannot wait for that and not appoint the CEO,” she said.

Several names have been bandied about, with former board member Sakhiwo Sodo’s name in the forefront.

However, Sodo denied he had landed the plum job, although he confirmed he had applied.

Another name mentioned was that of former boxing journalist Welile Mguli but when Daily Dispatch contacted him, he denied it, saying he was never called to an interview.

“Yes I did apply for the position but that was that. I never heard anything from anyone after that,” said Mguli.

This afternoon’s announcement is also expected to reveal the appointment of the director of operations, a position that was left vacant when Mtya was made the acting CEO.

Again, Ravele refused to confirm the name although she admitted the position had been filled.

“I want to first check the documents regarding all the positions that will be announced.

“All I can say is that the positions of the top management have been filled but whether we will announce all of them is another matter that has to be confirmed.” said Ravele.

However, sources reveal that former SABC employee Sibusiso Silinga will be revealed as Mtya’s successor.

BSA’s administration is currently in shambles, with boxers who fought in two major tournaments recently, yet to be paid their purses.

Since Mtya’s resignation, Mbalula’s department seconded Masilo Maake to help with administration but he also resigned from the department in February this year.

Ravele said Maake was requested to stay until the end of April. Since Maake’s departure, Thabang Moses, who has just been appointed as chief financial officer, had been acting in the position.
