Queen’s young buck is proving top-class act

Queen's College Grade 8 pupil Matt Dewar has enjoyed a top year of sport. His accomplishments keep stacking up as he impresses across the board with some outstanding sporting achievements.

“He is a very disciplined young athlete,” said Queen’s College head of sports Clinton Loest.  “He is a driven young man and that is what helps him to succeed.”

Traditionally, at Queen’s College, each pupil is expected to participate in a minimum of one summer and one winter sporting code.

In winter, Dewar captained the Queen’s College U14A hockey team, which had an excellent season. He was also selected to represent the provincial Amathole Schools U14A hockey team as vice-captain at the annual IPT in Stellenbosch in July.

Following the quick turnaround from winter to summer season, Dewar’s choice of sport in summer is cricket, while also playing tennis as a second sport.

This sees him train for cricket twice a week, on Mondays and Wednesdays, and tennis on a Tuesday and Thursday.

Dewar was also selected to represent Queen’s College at the prestigious Sammy Gunn Athletics Meeting to race the 800m, which meant he had to fit in training for that too.

On September 20, Queen’s College hosted an U14A Composite Australian Cricket team in remembrance of the famous Old Boy, Tony Greig.

Dewar captains the Queen’s College U14A team and gave an outstanding performance by scoring 107 runs in the match.

The following Saturday, Dewar competed in the Sammy Gunn meeting, where he competed against runners from the top schools in the Eastern Cape and was able to put in a top performance to win the event.

The U14A cricket team then embarked on a tour to Durban to take part in the Shaun Pollock U14 Cricket Festival hosted by Northwood High School from Saturday,

October 4-7.

At the festival, Queen’s played four cricket matches against Northwood High School, Waterkloof High, KZN Development and Parktown High.

In the match against Northwood on the first day, Dewar scored 74 runs and took three wickets for 24 runs.

On the third day, against KZN Development, Dewar scored 131 runs and took six wickets for 23 runs. On the final day he scored 27 not out in a 20/20 match against Parktown.

At the conclusion of the festival he had amassed 243 runs at an average of 122 runs and took nine wickets. This was a fantastic overall performance from the budding sportsman.

Three days later, on October 10, Dewar represented the Border U14 Country District tennis team in a tournament held in Graaff-Reinet and ended as the runner-up in the singles final.

Then he and fellow Queenian, Jonathan Russell, won the doubles final to cap off a great performance.

This impressive young sports enthusiast has the talent to go far if he keeps up his hard work and dedication.
