A thoroughly entertaining end to this year’s Border Schools rugby day played itself out at Selborne College on Saturday afternoon as Selborne overcame Hudson in a high-scoring encounter that featured nine tries.

Selborne claimed the win 43-22 in the end, but they were pushed all the way by a tenacious Hudson team, who did not start the game well, but found their feet as the match progressed. The match began with Selborne being awarded an early first-minute penalty that scrumhalf Josh Allderman put wide.

Selborne then enjoyed a strong period of attacking play that was rewarded in the fifth minute, when from an attacking scrum on Hudson’s 22m line, the ball was swung wide for wing Joshua Armstrong to go over in the right-hand corner. Allderman slotted the tough conversion for a 7-0 lead.

Nine minutes later from an attacking lineout in Hudson’s 22m, Selborne secured the ball and drove over the line with flank Heinrich Nieuwenhuizen dotting down and Allderman slotting the extras.

Hudson then worked their way back into the game with a solid period of play. Hudson scored their first points in the 22nd minute with a penalty in front from an infringement at a ruck and was slotted by Hudson flyhalf Hlumelo Mnyute.

Hudson then stunned Selborne by coming right back into the game, when from an attacking lineout a ruck was formed and inside centre Oyisa Hakula received the ball at pace and hit a gap to go over to the right of the uprights. Mnyute slotted the conversion to pull themselves to within four points.

But with two minutes left in the half, Selborne won a tighthead and attacked. A kick over the Hudson defence was chased down by Selborne inside centre David Brits, who scored in the corner.

Allderman missed the conversion, but still had time to slot a massive penalty near the halfway line on the halftime buzzer to give Selborne a 22-10 halftime lead.

Brits then ran in his second try just two minutes into the second half, bursting through the Hudson defence by handing off a defender to score under the posts, with Allderman adding the extras.

Three minutes later a slice of luck saw Hudson score their second try when on attack an attempted chip hit the ref and fell kindly into a Hudson player’s hands, with wing Mihlali

Boqwana receiving the final pass to score the unconverted try in the corner.

The play swung back and forth before Selborne scored through outside centre Tian Coetzer, who sliced through the Hudson defence to dot down in the right-hand corner with Allderman slotting the tough conversion.

Four minutes later Hudson replied with a good try as they attacked from turnover ball in Selborne’s half and finished with a converted try in the corner, to make the score 36-22.

With 44 points having been scored in a crazy 19-minute spell, the game then became a bit scrappy and stretched as mistakes and turnovers from both teams saw neither able to add to their score until the dying seconds of the match, when Selborne counter-attacked from their own 22m with Armstrong dotting down under the posts for his second try.

Allderman's conversion then ended the match with Selborne emerging 43-22 victors.
