Waveriders are geared for high-seas

Buffalo city metro is set to welcome 100 junior surfers to Nahoon Beach this weekend.

These keen young riders from around SA will be in East London competing in the 2A-rated Surfing SA Nahoon Junior Open presented by Twizza.

Strong winds and high seas are predicted for tomorrow and the groms and young riders are going to have to show guts and sharp skills – even before they get some face-time on the wave.

Yesterday, a three-metre super-southerly swell broke past Nahoon Reef causing long lines to wrap into the bay ending in solid four-foot closeout bombs on the beachbreak.

Nahoon Corner, however, showed promise but the deep channel near Austin’s at the Reef created a typical rip and south swell wonk which will make the paddle at Corner ultra-strenuous.

However, the cold front, which is predicted to arrive this morning with gales, swell and rain, will leave soon and conditions from Saturday afternoon onwards look calmer and the swell drops but stays above 1.5m, according to Windguru.

Scheduled to get under way at 8am tomorrow, the contest caters for boys and girls from U10 U18 divisions and offers points on the Surfing SA PST ratings as well as R15000 in prize-money.

This is the second annual East London event, and is hosted by Buffalo City Surfriders.

Surfing SA is holding eight youth tournaments at different surf spots around SA this year.

The Nahoon event is the third in the 2016 Gromcomp series. The event will take 22 hours to complete 65 heats over three days.

The public opening function is at the Nahoon Lifesaving Club at 6.30pm today and finals will be on Monday.
