Top SA funnymen set to perform in Canada

Popolar comedians Robbie Collins and David Kau will be flying the South African flag high when they perform at the Just For Laughs comedy festival in Montreal‚ Canada‚ later this month.

Just for Laughs is taking place from July 30 to August 1. Founded in 1983, the festival is held annually in Montreal. It is the largest international comedy festival in the world.

The two comedians are joining Comedy Central on the channel’s annual pilgrimage to Canada where they’ll be showcasing South African comedy at the world famous event.

In terms of an annual collaborative partnership with Comedy Central‚ Collins will be making his festival debut‚ while Kau is set to perform at Club Soda‚ one of the festival’s premiere club shows.

Kau’s performance is being taped as part of the  Just For Laughs: All Access television series‚ and will air on Comedy Central  late next year.

“Just For Laughs is such a great shop window for African comedy and we are delighted that Robbie and David will have this opportunity to show off their wares at the biggest comedy festival in the world‚” said Evert van der Veer‚  vice-president at Comedy Central Africa, in a statement.

Collins expressed his excitement‚ saying: “I’m very grateful to have this opportunity to represent my country and craft at the biggest comedy festival in the world.”

Kau revealed this will give him the opportunity to get together again with some of his international comedian buddies.

“I have a lot of catching up to do with some of my comedian friends who I haven’t seen in a while – the likes of  Finesse Mitchell‚ Lil Rel Howery and Russell Peters.

“Just For Laughs Comedy Festival is still the number one and biggest comedy festival in the world.

“I guess the cherry on top is going back there now with  Comedy Central Africa. It’s going to be a great day at the office‚” he said.

A veteran comedian, Kau’s work in South Africa has paved the way for many other performers.

One of his first TV productions was The Pure Monate Show, which featured comedians such as Kagiso Lediga and Loyiso Gola.

Kau has since become a film director, and he has produced a number of films for Mzansi Magic.

This year saw him bringing his one-man show, Mo Jokes to East London for the first time.

He has created a platform for many up and coming comedians in the country.

Some of them include Hlophe, Chris Mapane, and Thapelo Tips Seemise. — Tiso Black Star Group Entertainment
