The battle for the ABC Motsepe League 2015-16 championship is far from over with four club sides neck-and-neck in the race.

Mdantsane-based Tornado is leading the pack at the log summit with 39 points from 18 matches, tied on points with second-placed Lion City.

At position three is FC Elliot who have a single point less but will have themselves to blame following their goalless stalemate against Kokstad Liverpool at the weekend.

Zimbane Killers are fourth with two points behind log-leaders but with a game in hand.

The high-scoring Tornado seem well on track in their chase of the title but the Port Elizabeth-based rookies Lion City appear prepared to give them a run for their money.

Tornado coach Thobela Bikwani said his boys had worked hard for the current position which he vowed they were planning to maintain for as long as they can.

With 12 matches left before the season comes to an end, anything other than winning the championship for Tornado will be considered a failure after they finished second last year.

“So far, so good and all credit to my boys,” said Bikwani.

“We deserve to be in the log summit because my players have worked really hard and now people are about to see the best of Tornado.”

Bikwani continued that they were ready to absorb the pressure that comes with being on top as the objective was to go for maximum points in every match – home and away.

The test starts on Saturday when they visit Liverpool in Kokstad, the very club that halted Elliot at the weekend.

“It is not going to be easy but we will be out for maximum points.”

Tornado have been bolstered by their aggressive attack strategy that has seen them banging in a staggering 42 goals – nine more than second high scorers Zimbane.

Lion City on the other side appeared comfortable at the top, only for them to go down

1-0 to Young Ideas in a PE derby at the weekend and have another derby against Emperors FC scheduled for Saturday.

City though have to be commended for being among title contenders in what is their maiden season in the league.

They also happen to be the only PE side in the top six of what is a league dominated by clubs from the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro – five of which currently occupy the bottom five spots fighting against relegation.

The bottom five situation is what seems to be making things tough for City as it still has a date with all of them.

Also with an outside chance at the championship is fifth-placed EC Bees FC and FC Buffalo who are currently on position six. — zingisam@dispatch.co.za
