Woman who called traffic cop the k-word was ‘traumatised and snapped’: lawyer

Vicki Momberg‚ the Durban woman whose k-word tirade directed at a traffic officer was caught on a cellphone recording‚ tried to stop the media from recording court proceedings‚ claiming it prejudiced her.

Magistrate Penny Viljoen said on Thursday she would allow the capturing of still and video images before and after court proceedings‚ but not during.

Outside the Randburg Magistrate’s Court‚ National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Louw said the public has a right to be informed.

“There is an increase of racism cases‚ it is important that criminal charges are brought forward. We as the NPA are in support of Minister Michael Masutha criminalising racism‚” said Louw.

Momberg’s attorney‚ Nardus Grove‚ said her client was sorry for her utterances.

“She was traumatised and she snapped. She has always had a good relationship with her clients of all races‚” said Grove.

A letter of apology from Momberg would be submitted later in court‚ Grove said.

Viljoen postponed the matter to August 1 to allow the defence to have access to the case docket. – Tiso Black Star Group Digital
