NILAND, PATRICK JOHN (CHAPPIE)

77 YEARS OLD CAPE TOWN, WESTERN CAPE, SOUTH AFRICA 06/07/1942 – 15/01/2020

Chappie passed away on 15/01/2020 after a long illness.

Chappie began his colourful life in Adelaide, Eastern Cape, South Africa, where he grew up to farm alongside his father, Calixte, and brother, Graham, on the family farm, Chancery Hall. Chappie lived in East London, Port Elizabeth, Vanderbijlpark, Ladybrand, Vryburg, Pretoria and, finally, Cape Town.

Chappie was decidedly unafraid of adventure, and his work took him outside of South Africa, with many years spent in Botswana, Malawi, Transkei, Lesotho and Namibia.

Chappie loved all sport but bowls was closest to heart and he spent many a Saturday and Sunday afternoon exploring the various ‘rinks’ scattered in and around Southern Africa.

His passion for the sport saw him represent Malawi at the World Bowls in Australia (1980) and succeed at various regional and national tournaments at home in South Africa. He made countless fine friends on the Bowling Green (and in the pub after the game). Special mention must be made of the Blantyre, Ladybrand and Tweespruit Bowling clubs, where Chappie vigorously plied his trade (on the green and in the pub).

Chappie made wonderful and lifelong friends here, all of whom will share in our loss.

Chappie is survived by his brother, Graham, and his children, Cindy, Karen, Tyrone and Lefela, and his grandchildren, Curtiss, Brodie, Jessie, Brett, Emma, Luke, Rebecca, Lebo and Reabetsoe
