Spar workers denied bail over armed robbery

Two Spar employees have appeared in the Ngqeleni Magistrate's Court in connection with an armed robbery at the local supermarket, Eastern Cape police said on Thursday.

Assistant manager Sandile Silwana, 40, and clerk Nomonde Mantame, 28, were denied bail on Wednesday, Lieutenant Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said.

On 29 June, more than R200 000 was stolen from the shop in Ngqeleni, near Mthatha, in an armed robbery.

The two employees were arrested on Tuesday after the police investigation indicated the men were allegedly "working in cahoots with the robbers", Fatyela said.

The men would appear in court again next Thursday for their formal bail applications to be heard. - Sapa
