A plan to transfer critically injured Umhlobo Wenene FM DJ Saba Mbixane to a private hospital in Durban was cancelled at the last minute after doctors advised against it.
The popular traditional music radio show host’s family had requested Mbixane be transferred to the private hospital where he would be seen by a neurosurgeon for further medical treatment.
However, following a series of meetings a decision was reached to allow doctors at Nelson Mandela Central Hospital (NMCH) to continue caring for Mbixane, who underwent an operation to remove a blood clot after suffering head injuries from a motorcycle crash outside Mt Frere last Monday.
His condition has been described as “critical but stable”.
Mbixane, a three-time winner of the South African Traditional Music Awards (Sama) for radio show host, was possibly trying to avoid low-flying vultures when he crashed on a dirt road outside Mt Frere, according to an eyewitness.
He was taken to Madzikane kaZulu hospital and then flown to NMCH.
Mbixane’s transfer from Mthatha to Durban was opposed by the specialist team of doctors who reportedly argued that it was too risky to transfer a patient on life support.
Health department spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said Mbixane was receiving the best care.
Appeals by doctors and family to “all parties” for privacy should be respected. — loyisom@dispatch.co.za
