Cars collide on N2 leaving 2 dead

A collision between a taxi and a private vehicle on the N2 outside Butterworth has left two people dead.

Provincial transport’s Ncedo Kumbaca said the accident occurred just before 2pm.

He said details of how the had accident occurred and which vehicle the two deceased had been travelling in was still under investigation.

Kumbaca said an offence of drunken driving was reported in the Amathole District after 329 vehicles were stopped for routine checks.

Two warrants of arrest were executed and one unroadworthy vehicle was taken off the road.

“In Sara Baartman district we stopped 425 vehicles and issued 18 fines and executed one warrant of arrest. We also arrested one drunken driver.

“In Chris Hani district we arrested one driver with a fraudulent licence disc. In Alfred Nzo district we arrested three for drunken driving and a further two arrests were made against drivers without licences.”

In Buffalo City Metro there were no major accidents or loss of life, according to spokesman Keith Ngesi.

“However we still call for cautious driving during this hectic period,” he said. The warning came a day after a vehicle rolled on the N2 below Hemingways in East London and another vehicle landed on its roof in Pontoon Road.

Both drivers were taken to hospital but had no serious injuries.

Meanwhile three cars collided in Mthatha. Four people sustained minor injuries and were taken to hospital.
