Boost for artisans on the cards

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) wants an extra R1 000 per year for each pupil at a technical high school.

Currently, no-fee (quintile 1, 2 and 3) schools that offer technical vocational studies receive a R1 300 subsidy per year per pupil, which is the same amount received by academic schools.

In the Eastern Cape there are 112 schools that offer technical studies, some of which are purely technical schools and some which just offer a few technical subjects, such as engineering and graphic design.
