40,000 ID’s uncollected in Eastern Cape

At least 40,000 ID’s remain uncollected in the Eastern Cape, Minister of Home Affairs Siyabonga Cwele said on Wednesday.
Cwele was visiting King William’s Town to urge districts and municipalities to speed up the process of collection before the final voter registration this weekend.
Cwele said 40,000 ID’s remain uncollected throughout the province, with the bulk of these from O R Tambo, Nelson Mandela Bay and Buffalo City Metro.
Cwele said in King Williams Town there are still people who applied in 2013 who have yet to collect their ID’s.
“There are many people with the same scenario. We have over 3,000 incidents like this in just KWT.”
The Speaker of Matatiele municipality says many of the uncollected ID’s in her region are of dead people. She says there was a long pile of ID’s collecting dust of people who have died, and their ID’s are still active.
She adds that there must be something done by the Home Affairs department to ensure this stops. This was discovered after the municipality, together with the IEC and traditional leaders, engaged with communities...
