Yet another Eastern Cape taxi boss died in a hail of bullets at the weekend.

Libode police are searching for two unknown gunmen who shot dead a 50-year-old taxi owner in the Corhana administrative area near Mthatha on Friday night.

Provincial police spokesperson Brig Tembinkosi Kinana said the slaying, which happened at about 7pm on Friday, brought the number of taxi-related deaths in the province to three in as many weeks.

The identity of the Corhana taxi owner is yet to be made public.

“It is alleged he was trying to park his vehicle in front of his house when the two assailants approached him pretending to ask something from him," Kinana said.

“One opened fire towards the deceased’s vehicle, killing him instantly.

“The men fled on foot and boarded a taxi to the Mthatha CBD.

“The victim sustained several wounds to his upper body.

“It is not yet clear which taxi association he was affiliated to, and the motive for his killing is not known.”

On January 15, Border Alliance taxi association member Siyabonga Tungu, 27, was shot six times by men armed with assault rifles at the block of flats where he stayed in Belgravia, East London.

Tungu was shot in the complex’s parking area moments after stepping out of his vehicle, in what his family believe was a targeted hit by rival operators.

The unknown gunmen escaped in a silver Suzuki vehicle.

Only two months ago, Tungu's distraught life partner said, he had been lucky to escape with his life when he was shot at about 15 times on the Gulu bridge on the R72 near Kidd’s Beach.

His minibus was riddled with bullet holes.

A week before Tungu’s killing, a popular 47-year old-owner of sedan taxis (amaphela), was shot dead in Mdantsane, allegedly by the occupants of a white Mercedes-Benz.
