DESRAC MEC Fezeka Bayeni announced on Wednesday that R15 million relief grant has been injected to assist arts and sports practitioners who have been negatively impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Bayeni was speaking during the launch of the relief fund at Guild Theatre in East London.

The R15 million budget will be divided between sports and arts departments said the MEC.

“It is not a large amount of money because of the budget cuts from national government,” she said.

What we are doing as a department is not to fully subsidise an athlete for prize money the athlete would have won, but to compensate for your losses

“What we are doing as a department is not to fully subsidise an athlete for prize money the athlete would have won, but to compensate for your losses. The money won't be the same as the prize money,” said Bayeni.

Bayeni said the funding is only limited to this financial year and artists who qualify should provide proof that their livelihood was solely dependant on the arts activity they are involved in.

“Sports practitioners who host sporting events for example should provide proof of athlete participation, and should provide proof that this event has been happening annually “said Bayeni.

The deadline of the applications is 12 June 2020.
