Popular Butterworth soccer administrator Dumentlango Koyana has died after a long illness. He was 52.

He had been serving in the capacity of Mnquma Sports Council secretary.

Long-time friend Banzi Siyongwana said Koyana grew up in Butterworth and went on to obtain a teaching diploma.

Soccer was an integral part of his life.

“As a junior, he played for teams like Rangers and went onto play for Blackburn Rovers as a senior,” Siyongwana said.

“He focused on teaching but that didn’t stop his love for sport and youth development in sport, especially among the U10s and U13s.”

When Siyongwana joined the then-Eastern Cape Technikon, now Walter Sisulu University (WSU), he recruited Koyana as part of his sports management team.

“I was starting the sports department back then at the Ibika campus and I recruited Duma on a voluntary basis. This had a positive outcome in my opinion.

“I was department head of sport at WSU when he [Duma] took the provincial and institutional championship at the South African Student Sports Union Games in Cape Town in 2005.”

Current TS Galaxy goalkeeper Ludwe Mpakumpaku is one of Koyana’s success stories.

Mnquma municipal spokesperson Loyiso Mpalantshane said the municipality had worked closely with Koyana in planning and executing sports development programmes, including the Mnquma Mayoral Cup.

“His enthusiasm and commitment to sport in general is a huge loss to the municipality,” Mpalantshane said.

“He had a profound impact on the lives of so many talented youngsters, who he groomed and now play for the country’s top-flight soccer teams.

“He will be sorely missed and on behalf of the institution and the mayor we convey our most sincere and deepest condolences [to the family].”

Koyana matriculated from Vuli Valley Senior Secondary School and obtained his teacher’s diploma at Erstwhile Teachers College.

A drive-through memorial service was held at Msobomvu Sports Grounds on Thursday. His funeral takes place on Saturday.

Koyana leaves behind his wife and three children.
