A baby seal was rescued by a group of runners who found it struggling on the shore after being washed up on Nahoon Beach in East London on Tuesday morning.

Victor Moonieyan, one of the runners, said they had used his jacket to wrap around the seal as it was trying to bite people who attempted to assist.

“We eventually managed to get hold of the seal and help it get back into the water, where it started playing. The seal appeared to be getting more energetic as it  rolled back into the sea,”  Moonieyan told DispatchLIVE.

Moonieyan said it did not look like the seal was injured.

“We think that the seal might have come too close to the shore and been washed up,” he said.

“There were no injuries ... he or she just looked tired. We are not sure whether it was a male or female. We watched the seal for a while as it swam back into the ocean.”

According to Moonieyan, the seal was about a metre long.

Moonieyan's cousin, Michaela, took some photographs and said she was proud of Victor.

“It was extremely brave of him and I’m proud of him for risking being bitten to do a random act of kindness,” Michaela said.
