Eastern Cape police have reported that a six-year-old boy allegedly killed his five-year-old sister by accidentally shooting her in the head.

According to a police statement, on Thursday afternoon the siblings were playing with a .38 calibre revolver and a third boy, also aged six, when a shot accidentally went off, at a house in Extension 31, Bethelsdorp, outside Gqeberha.

Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the girl was shot in the head in the incident and rushed to the hospital in an ambulance in critical condition but she reportedly later died on Thursday night.

“Sadly, the 5-year-old girl passed away last night in hospital. A case of culpable homicide will be added to the defeating the ends of justice case,” said Naidu.

Charges of defeating the ends of justice have been opened for investigation as when police arrived at the scene the firearm had been removed and could not be found.
