Selborne beat Hudson 18-10 despite ‘whistle-happy ref’

First match after break ‘scrappy’.

A BRAVE effort from Hudson, two teams playing their first match after the winter break, and a whistle-happy ref contributed to a very stopstart and scrappy game from which Selborne College emerged as 18-10 winners at Hudson Park High School on Saturday afternoon.

The match, which Selborne led from early on, was never dominated by either team as the scoreline was kept respectable by constant handling errors, strong defence and a heavy penalty count, particularly against Selborne, during the game.

The match kicked off and Hudson were punished almost immediately as a clearance from just outside the 22m went out on the full, giving Selborne an attacking line-out.

The ball was spread from the line-out and Selborne flyhalf Morgan Steyn made the break before offloading to centre Brandon Perks who muscled over the line for the opening try.

Steyn’s conversion made it 7-0 after three minutes.

From the kick-off, Hudson secured the ball and broke into Selborne’s 22m for the first time in the game looking to strike back immediately, but conceded a penalty allowing Selborne to clear.

In the 11th minute, Selborne missed a great chance to score after they had an overlap on attack.

Selborne then went over the tryline for the second time in the 18th minute as Steyn dived over under the posts, but the try was not awarded after the linesman flagged for an earlier infringement the ref missed on the halfway when a Hudson player was high-tackled.

Two minutes later, Steyn then missed a shot at goal when Hudson were penalised at a ruck out wide on the left.

However, Selborne were not to be denied as from the 22 drop-out they attacked and Steyn was on hand to dive over in the corner, but was unable to convert as they took a 12-0 lead.

Hudson then enjoyed a spell of possession and managed to work their way into Selborne territory, eventually earning a 5m scrum.

Centre Khanya Mgebisa then hit the ball at pace off the back of the scrum to score next to the uprights, with flyhalf Hlumelo Mnyute converting to make it 12-7 going into half time.

The second half started with Hudson on the front foot and they further reduced the deficit in the 40th minute when Selborne were penalised at a ruck on their 5m line, with Mnyute slotting the easy attempt.

Steyn then made it a five-point game again three minutes later when Hudson conceded a penalty outside the 22m to the left of the uprights.

The rest of the half then became a match of attrition as the play became very messy and disjointed as the ref wouldn’t let play flow with a heavy penalty count.

Only Steyn troubled the scorers again, knocking over a penalty in the 58th minute to push them out of Hudson’s reach.

With time on the clock up, Selborne wing Michael Botha was then yellowcarded for a tip tackle on a Hudson player, with the match ending soon thereafter.
