Cricket action kicks into high gear tonight when group B of the African T20 Cup gets under way at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom.

The feast of weekend cricket begins at 6pm when North West and KwaZulu-Natal Inland clash in the opening match.

Border will begin their campaign in the second match tomorrow, when they play an exciting double- header.

After practising yesterday afternoon, the team will be using this morning’s final practice session to fine-tune their preparations and become fully accustomed to conditions before their opener, which will be crucial to the weekend fare.

“The team is excited and ready to get on the field and play,” said Border coach Frank Plaatjes.

A versatile Border team has been selected, with a host of allrounders in the mix, and this should make for some interesting play.

“We have two spinners, one turning the ball away from the right- hander, and the other vice versa against the left-handers, which is fantastic,” said Plaatjes.

“And we have loaded our team with allrounders, which is a bonus for the team.”

The Border team will feature two new faces this year, with young, exciting wicketkeeper-batsman and new Warriors signing Clyde Fortuin having joined the squad from Western Province.

Warriors stalwart and big-hitting allrounder Christiaan Jonker will also be playing for Border this year, which is an exciting development for the team.

“Jonker is a great addition to the team, not just as a player... the experience he brings to the team is invaluable,” said Plaatjes.

“He has played at the highest level and he is a match-winner in the shorter format of the game; he is just an amazing player.”

Border do have a number of other Warriors players in their line-up and they will be looking to them to put in some top performances in this weekend’s competition.

“It is absolutely fantastic to have all our Warriors players in the mix; they add such value to the team,” said Plaatjes.

Earlier this week the Border team participated in a team-building exercise, to help the players settle in the squad and again become used to playing together.

Plaatjes said the initiative was a great success.

“Our team-building was fantastic; the guys really enjoyed it and have really come together as a group, and I think that will benefit them in the competition.”

Border’s assault on the T20 Cup gets under way tomorrow against North West, with their second match, against Boland, starting about 30 minutes after the expected finishing time of their opening showdown.

They will play their third match on Sunday morning, at 10am
