Introducing Loyiso Sogoni

TO BUILD a double-storey home and have a wife, children and vehicle is an ambitious dream for a rural boy.

Loyiso Sogoni of Dumsi village in Bizana was sure this would be his life.

But he died at the age of 18 as a result of complications from being circumcised while an initiate in his village.

According to his family, Sogoni was a trusted person who “always brought back the change from the shop”.

His aunt, Nokuthula Mcotshelwa, said he would always wear a smile. “He was a joyful, and at times humorous person. He was every parent’s dream child,” she said.

Mcotshelwa said Loyiso wanted to teach. “He wanted to build the family a double-storey house, get married and educate his children.”

His grandmother, Mambingwa Sogoni, 65, said his death was a shock. “I will be alone here now. We did not expect this to happen to us. We will never forget him.”

One thing that makes Mambingwa hurt even more is hearing that Sogoni was allegedly prevented from seeing a doctor after falling sick. “I feel that those who caused this should face the music. I am told they prevented him from going to hospital. These days the initiation schools are more like death places. You doubt whether it’s the right thing to send your child to the mountains,” she said.
