Celebratory bashes planned

THE ANC will host celebratory bashes across the Eastern Cape in the coming weeks to thank supporters for yet another election victory in the province.

The ANC retained its grip on the Bhisho legislature with a landslide victory, defeating the DA and UDM by huge margins.

The provincial ANC won 70% of the votes in this week’s general elections. The province had more than 3.2 million registered voters, but only 2.1 million cast their votes.

The DA has taken over from the Congress of the People (COPE) as the province’s official opposition with 16.2% of the provincial votes, an improvement from 9.8% in 2009.

The UDM finished third with 6.14%.

On Thursday evening, sensing victory hours before the end of counting, ANC officials were already in a celebratory mood.

Party faithful gathered at an East London beachfront restaurant where champagne corks popped and whisky flowed well into the wee hours of Friday morning.

Addressing the scores in attendance, ANCF provincial chairman Phumulo Masualle said the event marked the first of many victory bashes in the province.

“This is just a small function to toast our landslide victory in the province. This outcome has showed us that the people of this province still have hope and trust in their organisation,” he said. “As our token of appreciation to our members and supporters who voted for this glorious movement, we will travel the length and breath of this province in the next few days celebrating with our people for entrusting the ANC to govern this province for yet another five years.”

Provincial ANC elections coordinator Mlibo Qoboshiyane said the party was especially happy with its victory in what had been the only DA-led council in the province, Baviaans municipality in the Cacadu district. The ANC took 49.8% of the 6404 votes in Baviaans, while the DA trailed with 47.5%.

“We are more than pleased to have made inroads and won that area. To us this is a dress rehearsal of what will happen in the 2016 local government elections where we plan to take over all municipalities in this province,” said Qoboshiyane.

Yesterday the street was cordoned off in front of the ANC’s provincial headquarters, Calata House in King William’s Town, where a street party was hosted.

Qoboshiyane said similar celebrations would be held in OR Tambo district, Buffalo City and Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, “before we move to all other regions and branches of our movement”.

“We will not only use these celebration bashes to thank all our volunteers and election machinery for a job well done, but also to launch our election campaign for the 2016 local government elections…we want to start now with preparing for the future of our movement.” — asandan@dispatch.co.za
