More charges have been laid against a wealthy Tsolo-based businessman who allegedly told traffic officers he was a Western Cape MEC after he was allegedly caught speeding in Gauteng.

Mcebisi Mlonzi, recently in the news for the controversial multimillion rand supply of heavy-duty roadworks machinery to various ruling ANC-controlled Eastern Cape municipalities, was driving a luxury sedan when he was allegedly clocked by a camera driving at 207km/h in a 120km/h zone on the N1 South in Midrand at around 2am on Sunday.

After a high-speed car chase he was was arrested in Corlett Drive and told Joburg Metro Police Department traffic officers he was the MEC for public safety and liaison in the DA-run Western Cape.

Dan Plato currently occupies this position. News of the “high-profile” arrest spread like wildfire but it was soon revealed that Mlonzi’s claims were false.

He was later released on R1500 bail after being detained at the Midrand police station. On Wednesday, Mlonzi failed to appear in the Midrand Magistrate’s Court.

JMPD spokesman Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said “the motorist” was now facing an extra charge of giving false information and misleading traffic officers.

He could not say why he had misrepresented himself. Mlonzi was not over the legal 0.05g/100ml alcohol limit.

“The officers said they could smell a little bit of alcohol (from his breath) but he wasn’t drunk or over the legal limit,” said Minnaar. He could not say if a warrant of arrest had been issued following Mlonzi’s failure to appear in court.

Plato accused Mlonzi of taking a “wild-chance” to escape being fined.

Midrand police station spokeswoman Constable Matome Tlamela could not be reached for comment at the time of writing. Mlonzi could also not be reached. — loyisom@dispatch.co.za
