A special day for fathers and children at the East London Zoo on Saturday to celebrate Father’s Day has helped turn some lives around.

Hosted by Man On A Mission (Moam), more than 30 children had the chance to explore the zoo, play with their dads and enjoy a braai prepared by them.

Moam is an activist movement for men aimed at addressing the ills of society, with a focus on manhood, spousehood and fatherhood. Moam’s Thabo Mkhencele said the event was aimed at challenging fathers to play an active role in their children’s lives.

“We want to address the issue of fatherhood because there are many fatherless children out there who need their father’s love.

“Married or not, if a man has a child, he must play an active role,” he said.

Some of the fathers who attended the special day said it was a life-changing experience. “As fathers we really need to step up.

“We must take care of our children” said Siyabulela Dukashe.

He said many divorced men or those who had children out of wedlock, tended to ignore their offspring.

Many fathers pushed their children away and expected their mothers to fulfil both roles, he said.

“Children are longing for their father’s love.

“As fathers, we have a responsibility to nurture our children.” Mthunzi Krwempe said fatherhood was not only about providing money – it was also about being part of a child’s development.

“We must have an impact and teach our children the righteous way to live, guided by the word of God,” said Krwempe.

Mkhencele said the day was such a success that Moam planned to organise more events throughout the year. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
