ANC in no-fee increase talks

The provincial executive committee (PEC) of the ANC has met Eastern Cape universities on a fact-finding mission about the impact of the no-fee increase next year.

This comes after the Daily Dispatch reported that the Department of Higher Education and Training announced last month that the national shortfall would amount to R2.3-billion based on tuition and residence figures.

ANC provincial spokesman Mlibo Qoboshiyane said the party had invited universities to a meeting on Monday.

Qoboshiyane said the meeting would also inform the party’s partners at universities on the impact of the no-fee increases.

“The vice chancellors presented a comprehensive analysis and challenges faced by higher education in the Eastern Cape,” said Qoboshiyane.

He added that they had also discussed the R400-million contribution by universities to the shortfall and the balance, which would be paid by the state.

Qoboshiyane said the meeting also raised the issue of the destruction of property at universities during student protests.

He said the PEC had committed to assist where it could. — msindisif@dispatch.co.za
