Mthatha woman shot dead

A small Mthatha community is in shock over the death of a 54-year-old woman who was gunned down in front of her husband outside her home on Tuesday night.

Buziwe Nkowane, a mother of four, was reportedly fetching her husband from a relative’s home when tragedy struck.

Her daughter Nyameka Gqiba, 21, said her mother had just left the house, when she heard what sounded like two gunshots near their home.

“She had come back from a tavern and went outside with my younger sister because it was hot inside. I was trying to fall asleep when I heard two gunshots. By the time I got to the scene, my mother was lying in a pool of blood,” she said.

Her sister, 13, said her mother had gone out of the yard after she heard her husband’s voice.

“She said she was going to fetch him. Next thing I heard a gunshot. When I went out of the yard, I saw a man hiding something under his arm,” she added.

However she could not make out his face and went back inside the yard.

She was startled by another gunshot and her father’s voice calling out to her mother.

“When I got to where she was lying, that’s when we discovered she had been shot.”

This is the second time in as many years that Nkowane has been shot at by unknown people.

Last year in June, she was shot in her abdomen after an unknown gunman fired at her while she was sleeping in her shack.

Mthatha police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Dineo Koena said no arrest had been made. — sikhon@dispatch.co.za
