OR Tambo honours promising pugilist

Boxing fans are in for a treat today as the OR Tambo district municipality and department of sport join forces to organise a fundraising tournament for Mthatha boxing sensation Sikho Nqothole.

Nqothole, 21, will fight in the boxing world championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, from June 14 to 26.

He will fight for a spot in the SA boxing team that goes to the Rio Olympic Games.

District director Michael Sodo said the tournament would start at noon at the Waterfall municipal hall.

The tournament will also be used to select boxers to represent the district at the upcoming provincial Elite Boxing Championships in Komani from June 10 to 12.

A weigh-in will be held this morning which will determine how many boxers and clubs will be at the tournament.

Entrance at the door costs R20 and the municipality was hoping to raise R10000 for Nqothole.

Sodo said they were 100% behind Nqothole.

“This young man is our shining star. He needs our support.

“We are very proud of this young man. We wish him well but we have no doubt that he will not only come back victorious but will also come back with gold.”

Sodo called on OR Tambo residents to support the event.

“It was suggested we charge R100 entrance but we decided against that since no one would pay that for amateur boxing.

“We also want to keep boxing alive in the region.” — ndamasem@dispatch.co.za
