Anger over wheelie bin no-show

A no-show by Buffalo City Metro workers left hundreds of Amalinda ratepayers fuming after they did not get wheelie bins delivered to them as promised.

The delivery, scheduled to take place on Saturday afternoon near the KFC outlet on Amalinda main road, was a followup to a chaotic delivery event on May 21.

On that occasion chaos ensued when residents, mostly elderly folk, did not receive wheelie bins after some people allegedly took more than one of the in-demand bins.

Two Ward 9 committee members led by the ANC’s Koko Godlo were among the team that delivered the bins last month.

Saturday’s no-show left many residents fuming, with some saying they were being disrespected.

Ward councillor Ntombizandile Mhlola said “ward committees failed to communicate because I knew on Friday that the bins would not be delivered on Saturday”.

A 68-year-old resident Gordon Nkatu said: “When we arrived at the open space for the delivery last month everything was chaotic and disorganised. Some of the bins did not even have wheels and some people took more than one, leaving other ratepayers empty-handed.”

“It was decided that because we did not receive on that day they would come back on Saturday but when we got there there was noone to attend to us.

“Elderly people wasted their afternoon waiting for wheelie bins and no one cared to explain to us what was happening and that is what makes me angry,” he said.

Another angry resident, Yoliswa Mzimba, said she received an sms last week informing her that they would get the bins on Saturday.

“People left there fuming because it was a waste of our time and energy. We are completely being disrespected because these people texted us telling us to go to the spot on Saturday but when we got there, there was no one to attend to us.”

Some residents said they did not understand why Godlo was a leader of the project when he did not even work for BCM.

But Godlo said: “I was just helping out the councillor in that ward as a resident who lives in the area. I am not a BCM employee and I am not responsible for the dishing out of the bins, I was just helping out.”

Asked when they would deliver again he said: “The wheelie bins will be delivered to the residents this coming weekend.

“They could not be delivered last weekend because the arrangement was not right.”

BCM spokesman Sibusiso Cindi did not respond to questions sent to him saying: “Unfortunately I am unable to get the response from the directorate of solid waste management.”
