Honour Mandela’s legacy by devoting time to charity‚ Graca Machel urges

Former statesman Nelson Mandela’s widow Graca Machel has urged South Africans to honour Mandela’s legacy by giving time to charity work.

Machel was speaking at the launch of an international Mandela Day awareness campaign held at the Dr Mathole Motshekga Primary school in Tembisa‚ Johannesburg‚ on Wednesday. International Mandela Day will be held on July 18.

Machel said the work done by the Nelson Mandela Foundation and other charities to help the needy was not for commercial gain.

“For those who have been doing good reminded by Mandela Day‚ definitely have not been doing it for commission because it’s their way of living throughout the 365 days of the year‚” she said.

“There are millions of people who are living this movement everyday and it’s not commercial‚ it became their lives‚ it changed the way they see themselves.”

Machel who was joined by popular television personalities‚ including Sophie Ndaba‚ Gerry Rantseli-Olsen and Robert Whitehead‚ urged people not to be mindful of cynics.

“Of course there are some of those who are cynical and besides I think it’s because they are not engaged. If they are not engaged they can afford to look and say it’s a commercial thing I don’t have to be part of‚” she said.

Nelson Mandela Foundation CEO Sello Godlo said the foundation chose to pledge with the container-structured school because it was a work of charity.

“The school was built by the community. They saw a need and they didn’t wait for something to give. They decided what can we do to help our children. Every bit of the school was started by the community who even contributed to the salaries of the teachers‚” he said.
