Warring taxi bosses smoke the peace pipe

Peace and stability was restored in Mthatha today after taxi industry bosses agreed to end the ongoing taxi violence in the region.

The agreement was reached at a closed meeting between taxi bosses and a police delegation led by Eastern Cape police commissioner Lieutenant-General Liziwe Ntshinga in Mthatha yesterday.

The agreement comes after taxi violence, which started in April and has claimed 11 lives already, flared up again yesterday.

At least 57 alleged culprits believed to be involved in the ongoing taxi violence were arrested this week as police work to bring stability to the region.

Five of the 57 appeared at the Ngqeleni Magistrate's Court today and denied bail. They were remanded in custody until next Tuesday.

Mthatha police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said they would continue deploying police in affected areas to ensure residents feel safe.
