Three people died after their vehicle overturned and caught alight on the road between Tarkastad and Komani at 3.45pm yesterday.
The three, all family members, were on their way from Cape Town to Ngcobo to sort out the funeral arrangements of a relative, police spokesman Captain Namhla Mdleleni said.
Two men and a seven-year-old boy died in the crash.
A 21-year-old man was injured and treated at Frontier Hospital. He was discharged later in the day.
Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
