An eight year old child died as he walked holding his mother’s hand things evening.
Mom and son died when they were hit by a taxi while crossing Qumza Highway in Mdantsane NU 1 at 6.35pm.
His one-year-old brother, who was on his mother’s back was severely injured, said provincial transport spokeswoman Khuselwa Rantjie.
The toddler was fighting for his life at Cecilia Makhiwane hospital.
Rantjie said a case of culpable homicide was opened.
Rantjie said: "It is alleged that a grey Toyota Avanza was travelling in an easterly direction towards East London when the mother and children appeared from the left."
The three went into the front left of the taxi.
