THE U18 South African Schools boys hockey team was named at the end of last week with Border boasting a very impressive six representatives out of the 36-man, two-team squad.

With the curtain coming down on an action-packed week of hockey at the inter-provincial hockey tourna ment won by Western Province in their backyard with KwaZulu-Natal taking the runner-up spot, the selectors had the unenviable task of picking two 18-man squads from the 24-team A and B sections.

Border played superbly to take third place after triumphing in the bronze medal match and had one Border player picked for the SA Schools U18 A team while the other five players were selected for the U18 B team.

“Their selection is a testament to the players’ hard work and effort that they put in over the season and especially during the tournament, said Border U18 inter-provincial week hockey coach Shane Knox.

Selborne College pupil Sarvesh Naidoo captained the impressive Border side, leading from the front and although being a powerful defender he scored the equalising goal from a penalty corner in their come from behind 2-1 victory over East ern Province in the third-fourth place playoff on the final day.

Naidoo was then selected for the SA Schools U18 A team having shown great leadership and top form over the Provincial Week.

“It is a fantastic achievement,” said Selborne first team hockey coach Shane Viviers.

“It is not often that you see a player who has played first team for three years get better, but Sarvesh has just gone from strength to strength,” said Viviers.

In the SA Schools B team Dale College emphatically led the way with four pupils making the side.

This made them the most repre sented school in the entire country playing for the SA Schools’ two teams.

Striker Callan Hanson, striker come midfielder Pambili Gada, goal keeper Yamkela Velem and midfield er Siya Sityana were the four Dale representatives in the Border team and they all went on to make the SA Schools B team.

Sityana was joint vice-captain of the Border side during the Provincial Week while Gada and Velem are both still U17.

Hudson Park High School’s multi-talented first team hockey and rugby star Qhayiya Jack was the fifth Border represen tative in the SA Schools B team.

Jack, an impressive midfielder who also plays flyhalf for his school’s first rugby team was the other co-vice captain for Border during the tour nament.

“These players have raw talent and they each bring a unique skill set to the team that will see them go far,” said Knox.

The Border team amassed four wins, two draws and a solitary loss during the provincial tournament.
