Bulldogs keen to keep their gunpowder dry

Border Bulldogs loose-head prop Blake Kyd believes the East London-based provincial team can still qualify for the Currie Cup Premier Division.

This despite Border having lost their previous two matches having started on a high with three wins on the trot.

According to Kyd, tomorrow’s encounter against Leopards in East London’s Buffalo City Stadium provides the home side the opportunity to redeem themselves and get their qualifiers campaign back on track.

The 27-year-old Bulldogs veteran, since relinquishing the captaincy to Siya Mdaka at the start of the current season, has seen his game improve tremendously.

But Kyd believes the whole team has punched above their weight thus far this season and expects them to do better going forward in the remainder of the qualifying campaign.

The Bulldogs can manage a bonus point win from the Leopards, said Kyd, as long as they get the basics right, which he believes they did not do in the previous two outings.

“We must get the basics such as scrums and lineouts right so we can unleash our backs,” said the honest KwaZulu-Natal-born gigantic prop.

“If our backs are on point, everything will fall into place because we need to get the clean ball to our forwards and one cannot work without the other.

“The backs are critical in this regard and with the two gelling together, we can definitely win against Leopards and in other matches that are still coming.”

Kyd backed his captain, Mdaka, who he described as the best man for the job and one who leads by example and from the front.

Although his personal game has been on the rise, Kyd admits there is room for improvement.

“It does help not being in a leadership position because you do not have to worry about the whole team, mostly your own performance and that I think has improved my game this year but it can always get better.”

Bulldogs actually do have a great chance of thumping the North West side who have been the second most chaotic side defensively thus far having conceded 169 points in just four matches.

As such, they are languishing third from the bottom of the 15-team logstandings.

But this may be what makes them more dangerous as they will be out for blood.

Kyd believes Border will overcome.

“We are going into the Leopards match wanting to win it. The losses against Pumas and Griquas was a bit of stumbling step but everybody in the team is in good spirit for this game and we believe we can come out with five points.”

Five points is no far-fetched goal against a porous opponent who are conceding at an average of 40 points per game.
