POSITION: Assistant News Editor
REPORTING TO: Editor
DEPARTMENT:  Editorial
LOCATION: East London

Purpose:

We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated Assistant News Editor. The candidate must have significant experience in the media industry with exceptional editing skills and ability to assist inleading a diverse team of multi-media reporters.

Main Responsibilities/Outcomes

 Assist News Editor and senior editorial staff in running an efficient digital and print news operation.

 Commission and manage news stories from reporters and freelancers.

 Ensure quality and immediacy of news content.

 Generate and develop ideas for news and news features projects for all news platforms. Repackage and rewrite news content from multiple sources.

 Deputize to the news editor as required. Skills, Attributes and Attitudes A strong news sense

 A thorough knowledge of journalistic ethics and practices

 Knowledge of issues affecting the Eastern Cape.

 Good general knowledge

 A commitment to high quality journalism

 Attention to detail, speed and accuracy

 Multi-tasking abilities

 Strong English language competence (verbal and written)

 Ability to work well with others in a newsroom

 Ability to manage and train staff members in news production

 Ability to cope with a continuous deadline-driven environment

 Willingness to work irregular hours, including late nights.

Qualifications and Experience

 Relevant tertiary education

 Experience in a mainstream newspaper
