REPORTING TO: News Editor
DEPARTMENT: Editorial
LOCATION: East London

The Daily Dispatch is looking for an experienced and highly motivated journalist to take up a position as a Mid-level reporter.

Main Responsibilities/Outcomes

•Must be self-motivated, extremely hard-working and able to generate story ideas.

•Must have an excellent command of the English language, both in its spoken and written forms.

•Must have a well-developed contact base in the Eastern Cape and Nationally.

•Ensure delivery of high-quality stories, and

•Perform any other duty as is reasonably assigned by the News desk.

Skills, Attributes and Attitudes

•Excellent interviewing, writing, reporting and story origination skills.

•Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. A team player who can also fly solo.

•Excellent news sense

•Understanding of the digital news environment

•Multimedia skills are advantageous

•Must be able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines

•Tenacity, a critical thinker who goes the extra mile and has a passion for news

•Must be prepared to work shifts, weekends and on public holidays and travel at short notice

•Excellent diarising skills.

•Must be highly professional.

•Must insist on maintaining highest integrity and meet strict accuracy criteria.

•Must be resourceful and willing to go beyond the call of duty.

Qualifications and Experience

•Relevant Diploma/Degree in Journalism;

•Must have a driver’s licence. This is non-negotiable.

•Must have at least 3 years reporting experience.

Short listed candidates may be asked to complete a writing and news reporting exercise.

The successful candidate will be expected to provide content for our digital platforms and must be able to use social media in their daily reporting.
