POSITION OVERVIEW

The Herald and Weekend Post invite applications for the position of Assistant Editor:Investigations for its print and digital platforms. The position entails helping to foster andexecute high-level investigative projects. The candidate will also be responsible for coachingand assisting reporters in the newsroom to produce ground-breaking stories that canbe published across platforms and effect positive change. The candidate will have to havein-depth knowledge and understanding of the news industry and they may be required to takestrategic decisions.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES / OUTCOMES

• Identify and lead investigative projects that have the potential to have major impact on society;• Mentor and guide reporters as they peruse documents, data and liaise with sources to obtain information;

• Ensure investigations are conducted in a thorough, fair and accurate manner, adhering to the Press Code;• Cultivate a culture of respect and teamwork within the organization, and an ethic of reporting with accuracy, fairness, humanity and compassion;• Identify, support and mentor reporting efforts across the newsroom;• Commissioning writers where appropriate, in conjunction with section editors;• Engage with internal and external stakeholders;• Drive a digital first news strategy;• Duty edit on occasion.• Upholding high journalist standards and ethics

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

• Relevant three-year diploma/degree. Post-graduate qualifications are an added advantage;• At least 10 years’ experience in journalism, including some editorial-management experience;• Exceptional news judgment and editing in a fast-paced publishing environment;• Excellent organisational skills; high performance organisational leadership;• Excellent research and writing skills;• Excellent communication skills;• Exceptional ability to lead organisational change;• Unimpeachable integrity• Ability to work irregular hours.
