Chris Hani region awaits ANC ruling

THE ANC’s top brass are scheduled to present a report to the party’s national executive committee next week on their findings on the party’s troubled Chris Hani region.

This follows a visit by the party’s top officials – chairwoman Baleka Mbete and secretary-general Gwede Mantashe – earlier this week.

The party’s provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane confirmed the visit yesterday, and that the officials “would now sit and craft a final report on their findings now that they have met everybody involved in Chris Hani.

“These include ANC leaders in the region, councillors, as well as our alliance partners in the area,” said Mabuyane.

The region is the third biggest in the province, and central in influencing outcomes of next month’s provincial elective conference.

The region’s son-of-the-soil, ANC provincial executive committee member Michael Peter, is touted among those who might contest Mabuyane’s second term in office as provincial secretary.

The Chris Hani crises was sparked by the regional executive committee (REC) dismissal of Lukhanji mayor Mncedisi Nontsele earlier this year. The region also demoted four senior ANC councillors and replaced them with four new mayoral committee members.

The group was accused of sowing divisions in the ANC-led council.

But another ANC faction in the region revolted against the decision saying Nontsele was ousted because he wanted to root out corruption. The divisions saw ANC meetings being disrupted and cars of some party leaders stoned.

Despite the unrest, the REC later resolved to charge 20 more ANC councillors in Lukhanji who were associated with Nontsele. The group was summoned to Calata House for a disciplinary hearing.

But a visit by the ANC’s top three officials led by the party’s deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa a month ago, saw the disciplinary process shelved pending the outcome of the officials’ investigation on events which unfolded in the region.

Mabuyane said, of Mantashe and Mbete’s visit on Sunday and Monday: “It appears that there were further unanswered questions following the DP’s visit a month ago.

“T he officials were here to get clarity from the structures, including the alliance. T he officials would craft a report which will be tabled at our NEC meeting next week.

“Any recommendations would be executed by the national working committee. Ours as the province would be to sit and wait,” said Mabuyane. —
