Two youths with social workers after child reports rape

Police are investigating allegations of the rape of a 13-year-old girl by two 16-year-old boys in an empty RDP house in Mdantsane’s Unit P.

The Daily Dispatch earlier reported that 126 houses had been standing empty since March last year, and more than 90 had been vandalised.

Residents nearby had expressed fears the houses could become a haven for criminals.

It is alleged that last Saturday, a 13-year-old girl from one of the newly-built RDP houses had left a phone on charge at her neighbour’s house because they did not have electricity.

On her way to collect the phone, the girl was allegedly lured into an empty house by a boy who said he had her phone.

Police spokesman Captain Mluleki Mbi confirmed the incident.

“Police are investigating a case of rape where the alleged suspects are minors. In accordance with the Child Care Act, the boys have been taken to social workers where they are currently undergoing their assessments.”

Ward councillor Zameka Gajula said that although she could not say why the houses were still empty, there would be less criminal activity if the beneficiaries would occupy their houses.

Provincial human settlements spokesman Lwandile Sicwetsha urged the beneficiaries of the houses to watch over their houses. BCM spokesman Thandy Matebese had not responded to questions by the time of writing. — mbalit@dispatch.co.za
