Proudly clad in black and green, hundreds of ANC Women’s League members voted for their new provincial leadership this weekend.Some of those in attendance included Tourism Deputy Minister Thoko Xasa, legislature speaker Noxolo Kiviet, social development MEC Nancy Sihlwayi, public works MEC Thandiswa Marawu as well as sports, arts and culture MEC Pemmy Majodina.

The conference was held at the Methodist Church in Wilsonia.

After the voting and counting, the following emerged victorious in their various portfolios:

lchairwoman: Bukiwe Fanta;

ldeputy chairwoman: Bulelwa Mabhengu;

lsecretary: Nolitha Ntobongwana;

ldeputy secretary: Khanyiswa Mdleleni, and;

ltreasurer: Nonqubela Peters.

On her appointment, Fanta said: “I am humbled.  I can see there is a burden to unite the Eastern Cape women and as a saved person  I believe that God will help me do that.

“We need to take back our strength as women in the Eastern Cape.

“We have noted that we have problems in our municipalities, but our work will include the ANC taking back Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.

“We want the ANC to govern that municipality because it is the economic hub of our province,” Fanta said.

ANCWL’s national secretary-general Sisisi Tolashe described the elective conference as a “huge milestone”.

“Women played a big role in the liberation struggle in order to ensure that the ANC was non-sexist.

“It has not been easy because we are in a patriarchal society.  However, women are now in a better position than they were 21 years ago.

“Now, we can work together to address gender-based issues and other social ills,” she said.

During the two-day conference, delegates discussed several issues concerning women in the Eastern Cape.

On Saturday, Xasa outlined some of the topics the women ought to discuss in their commission.

Some of the headline topics included building the organisation, women and the economy, women and health as well as women and education.

“We need to have a programme where, as the ANC women’s league, we go to the University of Fort Hare.  We want to have that university reclaimed by the ANC.

“Our leaders were educated there. The university is celebrating its centenary and we cannot have it run by the DA youth,” Xasa said.

Premier Phumulo Masualle made an appearance on Saturday, much to the delight of the ANCWL members.

Masualle wished the women all the best for the conference emphasising that its success was that of the ANC and of the people.

He said he attended a conference at the same venue where there was chaos and violence. He called on the women to vote and not forget the purpose of the conference. “Even if there are disagreements you must not let them trash the organisation. Let this conference honour the fallen founding members of the ANCWL,” Masualle said.

He added that the conference should emerge with concise plans of how to better the lives of women.
