Stats SA: Unemployment decreased in second quarter of this year

The number of employed people increased by 198‚000 during the second quarter of this year‚ with unemployment declining by 305 000 on a quarterly basis.

According to Statistics SA’s Quarterly Labour Survey results released in Pretoria on Wednesday‚ the unemployment rate decreased by 1‚4% to 25% between the first and second quarters of 2015.

The absorption rate increased by 43‚2% between the first and second quarters of the year‚ while the labour force participation rate declined to 58‚1% from 58‚6% over the same period.

The survey showed that the formal sector accounted for the largest share of employment at 69‚2% while agriculture accounted for the lowest share at 5‚6%.

Employment growth was largely supported by a rise of 177‚000 jobs in the formal sector. Employment in the formal sector increased by 39‚000.

Large quarterly gains were observed in the community and social services (98‚000)‚ construction (79‚000) and trade industries (73‚000).

Job losses were recorded in the finance (31‚000)‚ manufacturing (23‚000) and agriculture (22‚000).

Compared to the same period last year‚ employment increased by 563‚000 in the second quarter of 2015.
