‘Supporting local business a must’

Government had a duty to support local businesses because they boosted local economies and provided job opportunities for local people.

This is according to ANC provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane who was speaking at the Uniting Presbyterian Church in Burnshill Middledrift at a programme commemorating the closing of Women’s Month.

“Giving business to local service providers and supporting their trade has nothing to do with the so-called ‘Ngcobo homeboys’,” said Mabuyane referring to a report published by the Saturday Dispatch a month ago which exposed a secret recording between two top provincial officials.

Acting superintendent-general (SG) of education Raymond Tywakadi and former head of the Eastern Cape treasury Marion Mbina-Mthembu, who is now director-general in the office of premier Phumulo Masualle, were heard mentioning the phrase while talking about two department of

education contracts.

They spoke about alleged political interference in the tender process by Mabuyane, who they said wanted one of the tenders awarded to his “boys from Ngcobo”.

Yesterday, Mabuyane also took a jab at corrupt officials who used state resources for personal gain.

“Positions within political parties and especially government are not for individual gain, but for serving the society and delivering services to the people,” he said.

Delivering a sermon, the Reverend Zolile Mkentane encouraged women to take their place in society and campaign for women’s empowerment.

“Women must discover the purpose of their existence in life and take up a stand in society for them to have influence in their communities,” Mkentane said.

He said churches had a huge role to play in making sure that the society upheld high moral standards and advocated women’s rights.

“As churches, we should also play a role as middlemen between communities and government. We should inform political leaders about the plight of our people. We are here to give respect to women and also men who treat women with respect. Churches must assist political parties and government in building desirable communities,” he said.

Also present at the event were several ANC officials and ANC Women’s League members.
