EL centre to lead global fight against abuse

Masimanyane women’s support centre has been selected to formally head up an international network to end violence against women.

The East London-based non-governmental organisation was selected at a two-day planning session held at the Osner Hotel this week, following a meeting in Cape Town last year where 20 feminists from around the world agreed to form such a network.

The session was attended by former United Nations’ special rapporteur on violence against women Rashida Manjoo, who held the title from 2009 until July 2015.

Manjoo is currently an associate professor in the University of Cape Town’s law department.

Dr Ruth Manorama from India and Hilda Tadria from Uganda were among participants who agreed the point of difference of this network would be the inclusion of economic, social, cultural rights as an additional lens through which to analyse violence against women.

Former member of the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) Dorcas Corker Appiah from Ghana said Masimanyane had a strong footprint in the African continent.

Rachel Eapen Paul from the Equality Ombud’s office in Norway said it made sense for the NGO to lead the network because it had initiated the network.

Carole Shaw from Justice, Equality and Rights Access International in Australia said she was pleased to have the building blocks of such a network in place. — mbalit@dispatch.co.za
