Interaction yields new story leads

Daily Dispatch staff are compiling lists of story leads gleaned from another successful Café Newsroom morning last Saturday.

Editor Bongani Siqoko, section editors and reporters set up “office” at seven coffee shops all over East London and the response from readers was once again encouraging.

Siqoko, who was stationed at the Mdantsane SuperSpar, said he and metro reporter Zipo-Zenkosi Ncocazi had coffee with about 15 readers.

“They raised a number of issues – mainly crime, unemployment and complaints about electricity, water and roads,” he said.

A reader who enjoyed a cup of coffee with a team at Pine Creek spoke of her young granddaughter who has has just performed in a West End show.

Another, who went to Blue Goose Café in Crossways, reported that trees felled on the East Coastal resorts road have yet to be cleared away months later, posing a hazard to motorists.

One reader said Sunrise-on-Sea was reporting only two petty crimes per month thanks to an effective policing forum, while a coffee drinker at Sprouts in Nahoon told of highly qualified doctors who had chosen to live in the city thanks to its balmy lifestyle.

At North End Stadium’s clubhouse, members of the public complained that Parkside and Pefferville sports ground suffered from a lack of maintenance and and that potholes and blocked drains were an issue for residents of the area.

Dispatch newshounds also heard about inflated Buffalo City Metro bills, complaints about the Stoney Drift dump site and concern for cashiers working for a large retail chain who have no chairs to sit on.

Reporters will now follow up as many stories as possible over the next few weeks.
