Disputes lodged in nomination process

ANC members in some DR WB Rubusana (DRWBR) region wards are unhappy at how councillor candidates had been selected for the upcoming provincial elections.

They claim party processes were flouted in order “to impose” certain candidates against the wishes of the majority.

They have since lodged disputes with upper party structures in a bid to rectify the “dubious nominations”.

The party’s provincial executive sent a delegation, led by Nolitha Ntobongwana, to the regi

on – fo rmerly known as Buffalo City Metro – yesterday to hear complaints lodged by various disgruntled wards.

The meeting was still on the go yesterday at the time of writing.

A nomination meeting held in Mdantsane’s Ward 11 on Thursday evening nearly turned violent when close to 100 party members were locked outside the meeting venue at the NU5 rent office.

Frustrated party members burnt tyres in protest.

ANC ward member Mzwanele Lobese said of the 130 members in good standing, only 45 were allowed access and eventually voted for a candidate of their choice.

In Ward 17 – which incorporates Mdantsane’s NU3, a portion of NU9 and the nearby Eluxolweni Village – similar problems were reported.

Members say they were locked out of a meeting at Eluxolweni Community Hall on Friday, with BCM law enforcement officials “being used as security guards” to control who was let in.

Ward member Xolani Somaca said: “People we never saw in any ANC meeting before were allowed access and given voting rights.

“The credentials list was manipulated and unknown people allowed to vote for an imposed candidate.”

Somaca said 150 of the 349 members in the ward were locked out.

It is understood that disputes have been lodged by 18 other wards across BCM.

DRWBR regional secretary Phumlani Mkolo yesterday declined to speak on the matter saying the disputes had been lodged with the party’s provincial executive.

ANC provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane, provincial elections coordinator Mlibo Qoboshiyane and Ntobongwana, however, could not be reached by print deadline yesterday.
