Not missing a day of work really does pay off, and in the case of one Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) hourly-paid employee, it resulted in a spanking new car.

For more than 15 years MBSA has been encouraging and motivating employees through various incentives not to take time off from work outside their designated leave days.

In the return the company meets its production targets while employees who abide by the scheme have a chance of winning one of the luxury vehicles they build daily.

This year was no different when a 32-year-old employee walked away with a brand new white Mercedes-Benz C180 when his name was drawn on Monday afternoon.

The Saturday Dispatch agreed not to name the employee to protect his identity, however, when spoken to this week the delighted man said winning the C-Class had changed his life for the better.

“I could not believe it when a colleague of mine called me and asked why I was so lucky. However, as more and more people called me only then did it make sense to me.

“I was shocked and happy, although I knew that I had qualified for the draw.” He said he was in awe of how “beautiful” his new car is.

As a result of the strategy MBSA’s Asanda Fongqo said the company boasted an employee attendance rate of more than 99%.

“It is also worth mentioning that our attendance rate has been one of the key contributors to the sustainable growth of the company,” said Fongqo.

“At MBSA we continuously evaluate strategies on how we can recognise and motivate our employees.

“The plant opening event, which in its programme features the lucky draws, aims to motivate and promote discipline in terms of attendance amongst our workforce.

“Such initiatives are carried out as part of our broader Siyaphambili and production agreements which aim to promote healthy labour relations within our company,” Fongqo said.

During the draw on Monday more than 80 other employees who also qualified after not taking more than three days away from work won themselves cash prizes of R50000 and R15000 and cellphones. — mamelag@dispatch.co.za
