M'sane prisoner escapes just a months before his release

A prisoner who was left with just months in jail has escaped from the Middledrift prison.

Eastern Cape correctional services spokesman Zama Feni said 44-year-old Mzwandile Mpukwana was serving a seven-year prison term for house breaking and theft when he escaped yesterday.

He was last seen doing garden work with 10 other prisoners when he went missing. He was sentenced in 2010. He was due to be released in September.

"We find it shocking that someone who was on the verge of completing his sentence and due to be released in September could engage himself in an activity of this nature," Feni said.

He said if anybody happened to see a suspicious looking person in the community, they should call the police.

Feni said an internal investigation into how Mpukwana escaped will be instituted.

The prisoner hails from Mdantsane.
